If you are looking for a spectacular horse ride in Patagonia, you can´t miss this opportunity!

About the Estancia

The original name of this place was “Estancia Alice”. It was founded in 1.912 and its main activity was the production of wool. The region has the perfect weather and conditions for the breeding of sheep. The Merino sheep was very common in the estancias of Southern Patagonia, it’s the finest wool of the world. In the present, this old estancia is still running as a Patagonian lodge that offers many activities. The original shearing shed is still standing. Every day the estancia receives many visitors that get to see a shearing demonstration and a sheep roundup with dogs. The place has Kelpie dogs which is the Australian breed that specializes in working with sheep.

The estancia has everything one needs to enjoy a nice vacation, but what makes it stand out is its owner’s passion for horses and its strategic location. It is 20 kilometers away from the City of Calafate, lying by the turquoise waters of the Argentinian Lake (the third largest lake of South America). Riding with this surrounding view has no price! There is nothing like a long canter by the lake’s coast and then diving in the farm’s land where the Patagonian steppe will embrace you. The feeling of freedom can’t get any stronger than this.

Unique experience for horse lovers

Southern Patagonia is the ideal place for horse lovers, the endless landscape gives one the feeling of having no limits at all. The horse rides can go on for hours and hours, constantly stunning the rider with its amazing views: the immensity of the lake; the ice fields; the silver cordons of the Andes; and of course, the Patagonian skies with its particular and dazzling orange and violet sunsets.

Marcos, the owner of the place, offers one of the best riding experiences of the region. The estancia has a horse for every taste and level, most of the horses are criollos or mixed with Friesian and other strong breeds. They are suitable for the climate and the extreme conditions the area has through the year. Marcos is a great rider himself, always happy to take the visitors for a wild ride! That’s why the place is great for advanced riders.

Itinerary

  • Pick up at the guest 's hotel in Calafate and transfer to the estancia.
  • Welcome reception on the patagonian lodge. Marcos will be waiting to meet the riders and tell them about the ride and get to know their experience with horses. Based on their level, Marcos will assign the perfect horse for each of them. The place has all the equipment the riders may need: helmets and chaps. Already from the lodge riders will appreciate the view of the Argentinian Lake. Also, they can leave their personal belongings like bags or backpacks that they don’t want to take with them in the lodge.
  • When everybody 's ready, they will walk to the stables where they will meet and join their horses. The adventure begins here. Riders will pass by the old shearing shed and go down a small hill that will give them the first real view of the lake and the patagonian steppe that awaits. They will ride through the land full of its typical bushes, like the Calafate. The legend says those who try its fruit are destined to come back. In the way they will spot the estancia’s sheep besides from the many, many hares and birds of the region (condors, ducks, swans). If they are lucky they might even see red and gray foxes. On the way, riders will cross the Centinela River and get to another hill which will give them another great panoramic view. The Centinela River comes all the way down from the mountains and ends in the Argentinian Lake, inside the estancia. The river’s depth depends on the time of the year, being higher in springtime when the melting of the ice is stronger. Of course, Marcos knows all the crossing spots, so you will be safe and mostly dry!
  • Once the river is crossed, riders will find themselves in the immensity of the patagonian steppe. This is the best opportunity for a long canter feeling the wind in your face. The lake will be on your left and on the other side the estancia and the Frias Mount. Riders will arrive at a big hill (flat once at the top) which they will slowly climb. Once on top the view gets even better. After some picture time and a rest, they will descend towards the lake where they will notice the landscape will get a bit more desertic. Finally, they will get to some pretty big sand dunes where they will be able to gallop and walk around. After riding in the dunes, they will go even lower until reaching the lake. A tip doing down: lay your body back so as to balance the weight and help your horse go down easier.
  • Big picnic break: once near the lake, riders will get down off their horses and tie them to a bush for a nice rest. The guide will provide some snacks he will be carrying with himself. Energies will be charged in this amazing place.
  • The way back will be by the lake. If the weather allows, riders and horses can even enjoy the water.
  • Back on the estancia, riders will be taken back to the lobby where they can have a drink and just relax and have a rest. Once ready, a car will pick them up and take them back to their hotel in Calafate.

Best time to go

September to May. The best time for this ride is in December and January.

Location

The estancia is located on Provincial Route 11 that joins the City of Calafate with the National Park Los Glaciares, where the Perito Moreno Glacier is.

Other activities for riders and non riders companions

Calafate City is a very popular destination because of its proximity to the Perito Moreno Glacier. It’s one of Argentina’s most important tourist attractions, a must on the list of places to visit, and that’s why the place is prepared to receive its visitors with hotels and gastronomy of the highest level.

For those who prefer not to ride, a visit to the glaciers is a must. Mini trekking on the Perito Moreno Glacier is the most popular activity and the best way to get to know it. This service is provided by the company “Hielo y Aventura”, it includes the pick up at the estancia. The trekking begins with a short navigation through Argentino Lake up to the glacier. From here, passengers will walk for a few minutes until getting to the part where they sil start walking on the glacier itself. For this they will use special grampones tied to their shoes to have a firm grip on the ice. The views inside the glacier are incredible, not to mention the sounds of the ice cracking and detaching.

Later, passengers will be taken to the footbridges of the Perito Moreno where they will have a more panoramic view of the glacier. We advise taking the time to just sit down and watch, patience is highly rewarded. For those who wait the glacier offers its most amazing show, the calving of huge ice blocks.

Another option is to visit the Upsala Glacier. This includes a few hours of navigation through the Northern Arm of the Argentino Lake up to the glacier. During this, passengers will have a very close look at the Upsala Glacier and all its big detachments or icebergs floating in the lake.

Also, the estancia is only 20 minutes away from the City of Calafate, on the road towards the Perito Moreno Glacier. Even if the city has many activities to offer, Equus Argentina highly recommends visiting this estancia, even if you’re not a horse fan. The place offers:

Trekking and a visit to the “Laguna de los Pajaros” or Bird’s Lagoon. Southern Patagonia is perfect for bird watching. Here in the estancia there is a hidden shelter by the lagoon perfect to spot and take pictures of the birds in it. The most popular are the black neck swans and the beautiful flamencos.

A day in the estancia: this activity is a regular on high season. It starts at 17 hs and ends at 19 hs. It includes a welcome reception by the shearing shed, a guided tour of the place, a sheep roundup demonstration with Kelpie dogs, and a shearing demonstration. It ends with a delicious typical lamb asado.
