Misiones
Red Soil and Water Sanctuaries
Misiones is where the world famous Iguazu falls are located, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Iguazu Falls are shared by Argentina and Brazil and lend their name to the national park that hosts them. This water sanctuary has 275 waterfalls, most of them higher than 70 metres. In fact, the highest waterfall is located on Argentine territory and is called “Garganta del Diablo” (Devil’s Throat). Iguazu National Park offers long catwalks to move along and be able to watch the falls from different points of view. Boat tours along the river are another option.
Misiones, however, has many other charms to show. One of them is its dark red soil which calls everybody’s attention. The color is due to its many minerals, and it is considered to be the world’s richest soil. The contrast between the green of the jungle and the red of the soil makes for a very unique view to admire.
“Ruinas de San Ignacio” is the place the Jesus Company (Jesuits) chose to settle and is now a live testimony of their legacy. Jesuits used to cultivate tea and “yerba mate”. Indeed, it was in this area where the “yerba mate” was cultivated for the first time. If you like mate, the “Ruta del Mate” (Yerba Mate Trail) is another great way to explore Misiones.
Iguazu Falls are a must-see destination in Argentina, and EQUUS ARGENTINA invites you to dive into this wonderful land on horseback.
