La Pampa
An Open Field
The landscape of the province of La Pampa is 100% plain, hence its name. La Pampa means “open fields” in Quechua (both the language and name of the indian tribe that used to live in this area). This province doesn`t have much population and its weather is not as humid as that of Buenos Aires. In fact, it is drier, especially to the east and southeast of the province.
Santa Rosa is the capital city of La Pampa. Whenever driving from Buenos Aires to Patagonia, this city is a strategic stop before entering “La Ruta del Desierto” (the Desert Road).
As in many other parts of the country, the estancias and all related businesses drive the economy. The “Estancia San Huberto” is famous for its historical main house, which looks like a castle. Also, it has an important carriage collection. The estancia now is part of the Natural Calden Reservation (the calden is a type of tree that grows in the pampas). It is truly worth a visit.
Lihue Calel National Park is a fauna sanctuary also found in La Pampa. It’s a lovely oasis filled with rivers and water streams.
La Pampa´s gastronomy has its own personality. For example, asado is done with piquillin wood and leather. Spanish carbonada and pucheros are also very popular dishes.
