Mesopotamia
The Wilds of Argentina
Mesopotamia is the name given to the coastal area of Argentina. This is known as the wilds of the country. This region is located in the east, and it is made up of 3 provinces: Misiones, Entre Rios and Corrientes.
Argentina´s coastal area, as many other parts of the country, has many estancias connected by sand and gravel roads. As a consequence, this is a fine destination for horse riding because you can ride along its sandy roads and find scattered across the region old pulperias (rural bars) to stop and get some fresh drinks, beer, wine and picada (snacks) and enjoy listening to Chamame (local music).
Characteristics
The weather conditions in this area are ideal for the growth of lots of vegetation which provides for a great fauna diversity. Three huge rivers flow along the whole region: The Great Parana River, The Uruguay River and the Rio de la Plata River. The flow of these three rivers has created extensive estuaries and deltas. As a result, there are many lagoons, ideal to swim on horse, and soft hills.
Without a doubt, this is also an exceptional destination for fishing. The most famous fish species in the area is the Dorado. Other common local species include pacu, pati, and surubi.
A little history
Mesopotamia was originally occupied by the Guarani Tribe. Along with the Spanish conquest and the Jesuit colonization these tribes received a lot of their influence. Nowadays, there are many Guarani descendants whom you can hear speaking their native tongue – especially in the estancias. In fact, the gauchos in these estancias not only wear the traditional gaucho clothes, but also speak Guarani. Therefore, this is one the areas where Argentine rural customs are kept very much alive.
