Northern Patagonia
The Switzerland of South America
The name “Patagonia” comes from its former inhabitants, who seemed to have big feet – in Spanish “pata grande”. It’s a very wide territory divided in many regions and landscapes. Geographically, the Colorado river is the limit between Patagonia and La Pampa. It acts as a sanitary barrier, which is why Patagonia is free from equine infectious anemia (a horse disease) and from foot and mouth disease (in cows). Northern Patagonia covers the provinces of Neuquen, Rio Negro and Chubut. It is bordered to the west by the Andes Mountains and to the east by the Atlantic Ocean, where Peninsula Valdes is located.
It has the most stunning landscapes: volcanoes with snow-capped peaks, geisers, and thermal waters. In Patagonia you can also find mountains with glacier formations, many lakes and rivers, beautiful valleys, and mountain villages surrounded by ancient forests. It’s a wild, magical place and horseback riding together with sailing along its rivers in search of the brown trout and salmon are the best way to explore it.
