per person

Horse riding in Tucuman is an excellent choice to get to know in detail the beautiful lands and the culture of this province of Argentina. The horses will take you in this incredible adventure through rivers and mule trails. You will be riding your way through all the corners of Tucuman’s mountains. You will also get to know Tucuman´s people and their delicious food.

Nicolas Paz Posse is a real horse man and has a remarkable knowledge about the lands of Tucuman. He has lots of experience doing rides on “Cerro Horco” (in quechua language it means mountain of the goats). From its highest point (2.800 metres above sea level) riders can have a great panoramic view of all the surrounding valleys including Tafi del Valle (2 hours away from San Miguel de Tucuman).

Atahualpa Yupanqui, a famous folklore singer of Argentina, was inspired by this place. Many of his songs describe this region’s nature and culture.

Itinerary

  • Pick up and drop off in San Miguel de Tucuman Airport.
  • Night at Casa Lola Hotel Boutique. This exclusive hotel boutique is located in Yerba Buena, just by San Javier mountain and very close to San Miguel de Tucuman city. The hotel has 7 spacious and thematic rooms with the finest decoration. Also, their place has one of the best restaurants in the area.
  • The second day we will take you to the encounter with Nicolas to start the riding adventure. During this cavalcade, riders will cross rivers and ride through paths that long ago were used by local natives. After meeting Nicolas and having a technique talk about the next days riders will meet their horses and Nicolas will be able to evaluate each rider level. The first part of the trail will go to Anfama. This town is surrounded by green hills where farmers take their sheep to graze. Sights are breathtaking. Here, Ester and Enrique will be waiting with food and drinks.
  • During the second day, riders will arrive at Las Queñuas (a natural state reserve which is located 2.200 meters over sea level). After 7 or 8 hours on the road, riders will reach Posada Las Queñuas. This is a special spot for riders to relax, rest and enjoy one of the best views of the place. There is something very particular in Las Queñuas, and it’s the feeling of really connecting with the place and nature. Indeed, the posada was built over the old foundations of the estancia house and its building materials are all local: adobe, local stones and wood.
  • On the third day horses and riders will start the great journey across the different valleys of Tafi del Valle. They will ride the old Calchaqui trails through many slopes and rivers. The night is spent in another estancia lodge well prepared for riders to rest and refill their energies for the next day riding towards Tafi del Valle.
  • After breakfast, early in the morning, the last stretch begins. Riders will go up and then down. The view from the top is amazing. Before arriving, riders will be able to see old pirca corrals that local people used in Pre-Columbian times. Suddenly, the magical Tafi del Valle town appears after a pronounced slope indicating the end of the trail.
  • Night at the Castillo de Piedra Hotel in Tafi del Valle. The place is an old construction that resembles a castle. The views are incredible, there is a spa, jacuzzi and each room has a hydro massage bath. This is a special town with an excellent gastronomy, specially known for its “locro”.
  • Transfer to San Miguel de Tucuman Airport and return to Buenos Aires.

Location

Even though Tucuman is the country’s smallest province it has a great variety of landscapes to visit and a very rich culture. It is in the northwest of Argentine, it borders to the north with Salta, to the east with Santiago del Estero and to the south and west with Catamarca. Tafi del Valle is one of the Calchaqui Valley´s cities, it’s just an hour away from the capital city of San Miguel de Tucuman.

Other activities for riders and non riders companions

Tafi del Valle is the city of the Calchaqui valleys, only an hour away from the capital city of San Miguel de Tucuman. This area has been occupied for over two millennia, the first populations go back to 300 b.C. and were the ones who developed the Tafi culture. In the XVI century the Spanish conquerors arrived at this place but did not succeed in establishing it because the villagers of that time, the Diaguitas, resisted strongly. Later, the Jesuits arrived and dedicated mostly to the production of cheese.

The region is great to learn about the indigenous culture. At approximately one hour away towards Amaicha del Valle city you can find the Sacred City of Quilmes (“Ruinas de Quilmes”), where the remains of the most extensive Pre-Columbian settlement of Argentina can be found.

Trekking is a great option to get to know the area. There are many options: short, medium and long distance trails. The most popular ones are: Los Alisos Cascade, Mount El Pelao, Quebrada del Portugues and Mount Muñoz.

Walking through the town’s small cobbled streets, tasting cheese that was once the Jesuit’s recipes and visiting the artisan's walk are all options that can fill a whole day.

Tucuman’s gastronomy can’t be left behind, it’s an important characteristic of the place. Besides from the famous locro you can have a taste of Charqui, a cured meat, and of course Tucuman’s well known empanadas along with a good old jar of wine.
