Unique & Outstanding Horse Riding Experiences

Horse Riding in the Uco Valley

per person

Horse riding in the Uco Valley is the perfect opportunity to enjoy horses together with fishing. Argentina has great places to do fly fishing, many fanatics come to our country for this. Besides the famous Southern Patagonia and the Mesopotamia region, the other gem is on the west: the province of Mendoza. If you put together this place with horses the result is another fantastic opportunity to connect with nature. On the back of a horse, you will get to places unreachable by other means.

Mendoza gives the chance to enjoy horses and fishing in a spectacular and special place. For horse lovers, the feeling of riding in the mountain range has no comparison. The nature here is majestic. For those looking for fish, being able to find a river among the huge mountains and to practice the sport embraced by their silence is a magical moment.

Horse riding in the Andes Mountain range is definitely a powerful experience. Getting by horse to the perfect fishing spot between the mountains is another one.

About the place

Ricardo Palma and his family opened their estancia’s door some 20 years ago to share with the world a unique product. The experience of receiving tourists in their home and making them feel like one of them is now their life philosophy. There are many activities to do here such as bird and wildlife watching, trekking, bathing in the stream and, of course, horseback riding and fly fishing.

Location

The estancia is located in La Carrera zone, a locality that can be found on the route that joins Tupungato and Potrerillos. In this district one can access the Silver Cord, reaching up to 2.400 meters. This gives you a unique panoramic preview of the Andean foothills of Mendoza.

The Guevara stream, 18 km long, lies inside the estancia and is the perfect source of the rainbow trout. This activity includes a fishing clinic. If you prefer, you don’t need to take your own equipment. The place has all the equipment you need.

Itinerary

  • Pick up at the Plumerillo Airport in Mendoza. Transfer through route 40 to Las Carreras, Tupungato, in the Uco Valley. The ride is approximately two hours long, it has lovely views and it crosses the region of Lujan de Cuyo, very famous for its wines.
  • Check in at the estancia. Guests will be taken to their rooms and they will get to know the place’s facilities. This first day is to relax and have some rest. The ranch has six rooms, each decorated in a traditional way, with antique furniture and beautiful handmade blankets, and they offer spectacular Andean views. The service is full board; the highlights are the gastronomy accompanied by a great selection of wines. On this day guests and hosts will make a plan of the next day's activities.
  • On the first morning, after some delicious homemade breakfast, those who want to will go for a ride with one of the guides to inspect the mountain trails. The Guevara river can be crossed and it’s a good opportunity to discover the local wildlife, such as red deers, guanacos, hares and condors. In the afternoon: trekking.
  • Fly Fishing in the Guevara River: on this day the specialized guides for fly fishing will arrive with all the equipment for the sport. The length of the activity depends on the guests' will, it can be a couple of hours or even the whole day. We recommend spending the day by the stream, taking a picnic with you, bathing in the crystal waters and enjoying the peaceful surroundings. Those who prefer can go for a ride in the estancia’s trails.
  • On the third day guests can go for a whole day ride which includes a picnic with the mountain range as a background. Experienced riders can canter through the valley. The estancia has horses for every level. During the night: relaxing with a nice meal and a good glass of local wine.
  • Full moon horseback riding: for those lucky guests that arrive at the estancia and get to see the full moon they will have the option of doing it on the back of a horse. There’s nothing like riding Mendonza’s lands under the full moon’s light.
  • Check out of the estancia with destination to the city of Mendoza. Check in at Hotel Huentala. The hotel is very well located and it counts with all the facilities. Guests will be able to walk around the city and during the night they can enjoy dinner with a tango and folklore show.
  • On the next morning, after breakfast, they can visit Les Vignes des Andes winery. It’s owner, Vincent Chevallier, is our Equinoxe partner. His is a boutique winery where the wine Passion de los Andes is elaborated, as well as the olive oil under the same name. Here guests will enjoy a full day of wine tasting and asado for lunch and they will also have the possibility to do an hour and a half ride through the vineyards. There’s also some bikes for those who prefer. Dinner in Mendoza’s city.
  • Last day: transfer to the airport.

Other activities for riders and non riders companions

The touristic circuit of the Uco Valley can be accessed by the mythical route 40. This valley is formed by the departments of San Carlos, Tupungato and Tunuyan. The landscape is a real dream, framed by the Silver Cordon and Portillo and with the Tupungato hill dominating all the mountains. The region is known for producing excellent quality vines at a great height.

Between the possibilities of activities outside the estancia, the best is to visit the Tupungato wineries. We recommend a tour through Piedra Negra and Casa Petrini finishing in the afternoon at  Andeluna winery.

A little further, in the Tunuyan region, the hotel of the famous chef Francis Malmann can be found, The Wines. This is considered to be among the best 33 hotels in the world according to the Conde Nast magazine. We highly recommend this place as an optional activity.

Rancho e Cuero can be found on the picturesque route 89. Leaving from the estancia towards San Jose (a small town in Tupungato where guests can find restaurants to enjoy lunch or tea) the route goes down the valley until it reaches Chateau D’Ancon, a castle built in 1.933 by the Bombal family. This place has a garden that was designed by the famous landscaper, Carlos Thays. The castle is open for tourists from Thursdays to Sundays. It has many activities, such as wine tasting in the Chateau’s Boutique winery, bike rides, walking and horseback riding.
