Horse Riding in Cafayate Canyons
Another amazing destination in Salta to go horse riding is Cafayate. Even though this place is well known because of its wines, specially the ones elaborated at high altitude, it is also a beautiful landscape for horse riding. Hernan’s rides are perfect to get to know all the corners of this incredible place.
The city of Cafayate has a lot of activities to do. As always, we highly recommend exploring the land on horses. Hernan is another horse fanatic and in his farm he has different trails to discover, all of them mind blowing. The farm is only 20 minutes away from Cafayate city. It’s really easy to get there. The property has belonged to his family for over 100 years.
The horses are all carefully selected and taken care of. He has an even herd, well behaved and functional for long or short distances. There are horses for every rider, beginners or with more experience. Hernan is very professional and passionate about horses.
Hernan is the perfect host. He is kind, considerate and careful with his guests as with his horses. He will give each rider the perfect horse for them to feel comfortable and safe. As for beginners, he takes the time to show and explain all the basic and important tips for riding before going out.

Itinerary
- The ride begins in Hernan’s farm. Riders start moving to the southeast on a gravel road. After a few minutes, they deviate towards a large arid field covered by different species of shrubs and inhabited by the typical animals of the area (foxes, partridges, hares, etc.). Straight ahead you will be accompanied by the mighty Cerro Zorrito, full of history, myths and legends. This is one of the highest in the Calchaqui Valleys.
- Little by little, the land is painted by different shades of red and oranges. The ride runs along a tributary of water called Colorado River. This is dry for most of the year but you can still see the traces of the water. This is the typical Cafayate landscape. Riders will gradually enter a gully of red earth, buried at the foot of the hills. They will zig zag their way on the magical mountain canyon full of red and white sediments. Here one can appreciate the silence, peace and mystery of the area.
- After a while, the path becomes impossible for horses to continue. Here, riders will go down and continue on their own feet. They will walk around the canyon, until a cave called “the old Salamanca”. North legends say these were the caves of the devil. Hopefully not this one! Guests can take pictures and contemplate the amazing topography.
- After the walking and resting, riders will go back on their horses and head back to the farm. If the ride is in the afternoon, they will be able to see a beautiful sunset.
* All rides can be done in the morning as well as in the afternoon.
* There are different trails with different durations and landscapes.Location

Other activities for riders and non riders companions
Cafayate is a great place that offers many activities to do. Mainly, we recommend visiting some of the many wineries it has. All of them are distributed around the city, very nearby. Some of them are even in the city itself. These are great dinner options.
The gastronomy in this place is incredible. All of the main restaurants can be found around the main square. Cafayate is also famous for making a delicious Malbec ice cream. A local ice cream shop has been making it for many years. It also has the Cabernet and Torrontes variety. They are the perfect ending for a perfect meal.
Also, the famous Route 40 goes through Cafayate. It goes from the south of Argentina to the north. If you take this route, only 20 minutes away you will get to San Carlos town. It is a very lovely place. We recommend walking on General San Martin Street. It’s an historic colonial passage that goes back to the year 1.711. The old houses are amazing.
A few minutes away from Cafayate city there are some big sand dunes that are fun to visit. It’s a good trekking opportunity and also great for taking pictures. Besides, the Route 68 that joins Cafayate and Salta is very picturesque. There are many attractions on the way, such as La Garganta del Diablo and El Anfiteatro. These are all famous rock formations, very spectacular.
