Uritorco Mountain Horseride in Cordoba

per person

Cordoba is one of Argentina’s true gems. It’s known for its long stretches of tree-covered mountains and charming villages nestled side by side. The region also features rivers, waterfalls, and a climate that’s ideal for enjoying both in winter and summer.

The horseback ride begins at La Lorna ranch, located in the town of La Cumbre, just 100 km from the city of Córdoba. The area was originally colonized by Sicilians and Spaniards, and later, with the arrival of the railroad, by the English and other Anglo-Saxons. The architecture, gardens, and landscapes still reflect the charm of a European summer village.

Eve and Franco, both passionate about horses, lead horseback riding tours throughout the Punilla Valley in the Sierras of Argentina. This valley is one of the most visited areas in Córdoba province, known for its natural beauty, pleasant climate, and the warm character of its people.

La Lorna – a ranch located on the way to Estancia El Rosario (famous for its homemade sweets) – is only 20 minutes from downtown La Cumbre. The ranch is distinguished by its grove of trees and its stone and brick stables, which reflect the architectural style of the surrounding village.

The region offers several trails for horseback exploration, ranging from 4-hour rides through the sierras to 2-night, 3-day adventures in Cerro Uritorco or Los Gigantes.

Córdoba is a perfect destination for those who love nature, countryside, and of course, horses.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival at La Lorna from La Cumbre at 10 AM. The ranch is located en route to Estancia El Rosario, about 20 minutes from the town center. Upon arrival, hosts Eve and Franco will welcome guests and assign horses and gear. Those who wish can saddle their own horse under Franco’s supervision.

Once everyone is ready, the journey to Uritorco begins. The plan is to ride for about 3 hours through the mountains and stop for lunch along the way at a scenic viewpoint overlooking Cerro Uritorco.

After a short nap and some mate, the ride continues for another 3 hours until reaching Cerro Uritorco and Puesto Pavón, where the group will spend the night. In the evening, everyone will gather around the firepit to watch the preparation of the traditional Argentine asado (barbecue) for dinner.

Day 2: In the morning, guests will enjoy mate, coffee, or tea with sweet treats and one of the best views of Cerro Uritorco. Then, at a relaxed pace, they’ll prepare the horses to begin the ride toward the summit of this impressive peak. The horses will go almost all the way up, with the final stretch completed on foot due to the terrain being unsuitable for horses.

After reaching the summit, the group will ride back down and have lunch at Puesto Pavón. The afternoon is for enjoying the peace and quiet of the mountains and the feeling of being in the middle of nowhere. Those who wish can go for a hike to explore the area.

Dinner and overnight stay will once again be at Puesto Pavón.

Day 3: After breakfast, the group returns to La Lorna, the starting point in La Cumbre. This will be a long day with approximately 6 hours of horseback riding. Halfway through the ride, there will be a stop for lunch. Arrival is expected around sunset, when the Cordoban sun paints the mountains in hues of ochre and gold. End of the experience.

It’s recommended to spend the third night in a hotel in La Cumbre. One of our favorite options is the Castillo de Mandel, a dreamy place reminiscent of the Belle Époque and located close to La Lorna. From its balconies, you can enjoy some of the most beautiful views in La Cumbre and reflect on the past days of horseback riding.

Other activities for riders and non riders companions

La Cumbre is a favorite destination for both locals from Córdoba and visitors from Buenos Aires. It has long been a summer retreat chosen by the Buenos Aires aristocracy. Many well-known artists and writers settled here, including the famous writer Manuel Mujica Lainez.

The town offers a rich cultural and culinary scene. From a cultural standpoint, the European-style architecture of its mansion-like homes, built with stone and brick, is particularly striking. Simply walking its streets is an activity in itself.

Downtown La Cumbre offers a wide range of dining options, with a European café style dominating every corner, as well as restaurants nestled in the hills of both Sierra Grande and Sierra Chica.

Cordoba’s rivers and waterfalls are must-see attractions for any visitor. Their crystal-clear, temperate waters and the high summer temperatures invite swimming and relaxation. The Pinto River is one of the most visited in the area, and there is even a guided horseback ride to this picturesque location organized by Eve and Franco.
