You will never get tired of riding and discovering with your horse these beautiful lands. In the ranch you will meet people from all over the world and live an experience like never before.
About the place
The lodge is in the North of the province of Neuquen, almost in the border with Chile and by the border of Mendoza.
This is a family-owned 100.000 acres working ranch and adventure vacation destination nestled in the Andean foothills of Northern Patagonia. It’s a refuge in deep nature where guests come from around the world. Here they get to experience miles of unfenced horseback riding, world class fly fishing, and a cultural experience unlike anywhere else.
The main house was built with local materials such as wood and stone and is original from 1980. Each room has its particular furniture and decoration. All rooms have spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and the Trocoman River. The house has 5 big rooms, and they give a very personalized service to their guests.
The owners
The property has been in the Carrither family for two generations. T. A. Carrither has been coming to Ranquilco since age ten, when his father Ashley Carrither bought the ranch. He spent his formative years endlessly exploring the land, forming a deeply intimate knowledge of its rolling plateaus, snaking river valleys and mountain passes. Nowadays he lives here from December till March and he manages the ranch with his wife Lulu.
All members of Carrither family are horse lovers. Indeed, Ashley Carrither, T.A’s father, stills visits the estancia and enjoys telling stories of his times playing polo, fly fishing and riding in Patagonia.
Horse paradise
Regarding horses, this a unique place because it’s one of the only places where guests can ride pure Arab horses. This makes it a special destination for those who practice endurance sport. There are also other types of horses such as criollos and thoroughbreds and a mix between these breeds.
At this ranch everything is about horses, visitors will have the real opportunity to establish a real bond with them. Here, the guides and members of the staff will try to get riders involved with their horses as much as they can.
The Estancia was chosen by renowned horse whisperers such as Reata Brannaman and Gabe Clark, both from the United States. Once a year they travel to Ranquilco to share their knowledge about horses and do a 10-day horsemanship clinic.

Itinerary
- There are two options to get to the estancia, it's a long trip but it's really worth it. The quickest way is to get by plane to the city of Neuquen (capital city of the province of Neuquen). Notice it's important to get an early flight because from the city of Neuquen to the estancia there are about 600 kilometers, this means a 5 hour drive. The other way of getting to the estancia is by bus from Buenos Aires City to Zapala City, and from here a 3 hour car drive to the estancia.
- This is a very special holiday for horse lovers because from the very beginning till the very end riders will be in contact with horses. They will meet the driver that will take them to the estancia in the town of Neuquen or Zapala; they will have a prepared picnic lunch upon arrival that they will be able to have during the trip to the estancia. Once they get to the spot of Buta Mallin they will meet the estancia´s guides that will be waiting for them with horses and mules to carry the luggage. From Buta Mallin, riders will ride for two and a half hours to the heart of the estancia where the lodge is located. Once at the estancia they will be able to settle into their room and meet the estancia hosts and staff. Welcome glass of wine at the terrace of “Casa Grande”. Dinner at the main house.
- The idea of the second day is that guests get acquainted with the place, people and horses. This day riders will go for a short guided ride and enjoy a picnic lunch on the river banks. Guides will evaluate each rider's riding level so as to give them the horse that best suits them for the following days. During the afternoon they will have time to rest and prepare for the pack trip.
- Start of the Pack Trip: while guests have a delicious breakfast, gauchos and guides will be preparing the mules that will carry the luggage; those riders that feel like will be allowed to clean and saddle their own horses. We think this a great idea because watching how someone saddles a horse tells us a lot about their riding experience. Once ready, they will ride about six hours - out of the Trocoman River valley, across a high plateau, and down a steep and breathtaking trail, ending at the high mountain puesto camp in the Laguna Negra Valley. The valley is home to a gorgeous alpine lake surrounded by jagged peaks, waterfalls, and hanging meadows. The puesto camp has a few simple huts (where the gauchos live) and other basic backcountry luxuries, such as benches, a sink, and an outhouse. It makes for a wonderful home base. Here they will have a chance to spend time with the local gauchos that tend the herds of cattle, sheep, and goats in these beautiful summer grazing lands. They will set up camp and enjoy a meal around the fire. Sleep under the huge sky or cozy up in the tents.
- 4th and 5th days: riders will spend these days exploring the valley by horse and foot, fishing, swimming and lounging at the lake. In the evenings, they will hang out around the fire at the puesto and share stories with gauchos.
- Day 6: after breakfast riders will make their way back down to the estancia, following a different trail that will take them along the edge of the Picunleo Valley, experiencing sweeping views up the Trocoman River to the Copahue Volcano. This evening they will be reunited with lodge comforts - cold beers, hot showers, and big beds. Savor a meal featuring fresh garden vegetables, ranch-raised meat, and Argentine wines.
- Last day at the estancia, guests will be able to relax at the riverside sauna, walk around the area and ride to the confluence of the Pincunleo and Trocoman river. In the night they will be invited to an asado and a late night gaucho dance to celebrate the completion of a magnificent adventure.
- The following and last day guests will pack up and ride back to Buta Mallin to meet the drivers. Drive to Zapala, arriving by 4:00 pm. From there, catch a bus back to Buenos Aires or head to Bariloche, San Martin de los Andes, or even over to Chile.
Location
Cholar town is the nearest town to the estancia, located in the Ñorquin department in the province of Neuquen Argentina. The access to this town is by Provincial Road 6, 64 km west from the town of Chos Malal.
Other activities for riders and non riders companions
Ranquilco Ranch is a destination in itself and offers multiple activities to do apart from horse riding: it's a special spot to practice fly fishing in virgin waters of the Trocoman and Picunleo rivers. By the river bank there is a house named “Trocoman House” which is equipped to offer guests the chance to leave their fishing equipment there and head every day from the main house to the river to fish or take a bath.
For riders' companions, the “Trocoman House” is an ideal place to relax, have some reading, writing or even painting sessions. A bath in the healing waters of the Trocoman River is ideal to connect with nature and enjoy the peace of Patagonia. There are many trekking paths to explore and do some birdwatching.
The nearest town is El Cholar, here the “Fiestas del Ñaco '' celebration takes place in February. During this, many musicians gather to give a great show and visitors can taste traditional Patagonian food. Also, there is a gaucho skill demonstration show. This celebration is part of Neuquén's tourist circuit offer.
