Unique & Outstanding Horse Riding Experiences

The Patagonian Whale Horse Riding

$0 per person

Where the winds of the Patagonian steppe kiss the Atlantic’s wild shores, a one-of-a-kind
experience emerges: a horseback ride with whale watching and marine wildlife sightings. An experience only compared to the ride in Africa watching wild fauna.

Península Valdes is located at the east of Northern Patagonia by the Atlantic Ocean, in the province of Chubut. The best way to get there is by plane flying to Puerto Madryn (main city of the area) or Trelew airport – both located 180 km from the starting point of the ride. The other way to get to this destination is by car: 1200 km from Buenos Aires city.

This is an epic adventure for horse lovers, inviting them to discover the biodiversity of maritime Patagonia in its purest form, complemented by the subtle yet essential touch of local culture and tradition.

This is a very special place, not only was the place where ANTOINE DE SAINT – EXUPERY got inspired to write The Little Prince, but also lies within the UNESCO World Heritage Site territory.

During this multi day ride, riders will be able to go through sweeping landscapes shaped by wind and sea—rugged cliffs, ancient ravines, and endless beaches that seem to stretch into eternity. Here, time slows down, meals are prepared with love, and every sunset feels like a gift. Nights will feel magical as riders will be able to hear the soothing calls of whales while they sleep by the shore of the sea.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arriving to the Estancia. Pick up by the airport. A private driver will take riders to Migue and Toti´s spectacular estancia. The ranch is located in Peninsula Valdes National Park, part to the way is by road and another part is gravel road - which makes you feel you are heading to a wild and solitary place.

While heading to the main house it is highly probable that passengers will be able to see local fauna such as guanacos, hares and rheas. Finally they will arrive at the house where they will be invited to have a home made afternoon tea and settle down in their respectives rooms.

Also, this will be the time to talk about the next few days and to pack the saddle bags. As the sun sets, painting the steppe in hues of gold and crimson, guests will enjoy a traditional Patagonian dinner at the saddle house, setting the tone for the journey ahead.

Day 2: From the steppe to the sea. Today starts the real adventure! Riders will have a good breakfast as they will need to be strong to do 20 km riding (between 6 and 7 hours). This first 15 km leg of the ride will take them across the arid Patagonian steppe, a unique landscape that embodies the region's essence: its harshness, beauty, and the incredible adaptability of life in scarcity. After hours of riding, the stunning view of the sea from the cliffs is the ultimate reward.

Lunch will take place at La Anita - a natural lookout over the San Jose Guld. Here they will be able to rest and contemplate the breathtaking wild view of the ocean. During the afternoon they will keep on going along the coastline, where whale watching from above offers spectacular sights.

At sunset they will arrive at Fracaso- San Jose beach. This is a historic point because it was the place where Magallanes expedition took place in the 16th century. This is one of our favourite parts of the ride because riders will be able to canter by the beach. Night will be spent in a camp sheltered by tamarisk trees. They will be invited to join around the fire and enjoy the views of the patagonian skies. Sleeping by the ocean will give them the chance to hear the sound of the whales.

Day 3: Atlantic Patagonia. Waking up on the beach, with the horizon painted in shades of orange and red, marks the start of another unforgettable day. After breakfast and preparing the horses, riders will hit the road riding along the coast, passing through canyons with ancient seabeds and marine fossils.

The first stop will take place at La Española Beach and then to El Pico. Here they will require dismounting as the path is very steep. They will walk to a place that offers one of the peninsula´s most impressive views!

During the afternoon they will keep on moving, heading to Las Cuevas, the next campsite. On the way they will be able to gallop along the beach and even swim with the horses! They will also be able to enjoy an amazing sun down while they take a good Argentinian wine. Around the fire, stories are shared, laughter echoes, and the evening feels infinite.

Day 4: Following ancient trails. Today is a very interesting day as riders will approach a spot called El Borde from where whales often come within 50 meters of the shore. There are no words to explain the feeling of riding and having such huge sea animals just beside you jumping, showing their tales and singing.

The route continues along paths shaped by centuries of wind and water, each corner revealing another breathtaking view. The following stop will be at El Picadero, a historical site where the Tehuelches (native nomad indian that used to live in Patagonia) crafted their hunting and working tools. If lucky, they might even find an ancient arrowhead or "boleadora."

The most challenging stretch will be the climb to El Filo. From here, the 360° views of the gulf, teeming with whales and their calves, are simply spectacular. At Playa Larga, the final stop, they will enjoy lunch before heading back to the estancia, once again crossing the steppe.

In the afternoon riders will be back at the main house where they will un saddle, leave their horses to rest and have time to relax: take a good bath, drink wine and taste delicious homemade food.

Day 5: Whale watching by boat. The fifth day has no horse activity, as guests will have time off in the morning to rest, walk around the main house, do some bird watching and get prepared for the afternoon navigation!

After lunch a transport will take them to the town of Puerto Piramides - small and only town of Peninsula Valdes - where the captain of the boat will be waiting for them to take them to watch the whales at an incredible distance! This is a MUST in this destination! Riders will be able to watch the whales swimming underneath the boat and even see them jump super close! After three hours sailing they will come back, walk some time around the town and head back to the estancia to have their last dinner and share all the memories of this spectacular adventure.

The following morning a driver will come and pick them up to take them to the airport or to the town if they wish to stay longer.

Location

The ranch is located 45 minutes away from Puerto Piramides town and 180 km away from Puerto Madryn.

Other activities for riders and non riders companions

Puerto Madryn is a coastal sea city with a strategic location: is equidistant from many of the main touristic places of the region such as Peninsula Valdes and Punta Tombo (located about two hours south of Puerto Madryn by car in Atlantic Patagonia, Punta Tombo contains a variety of trails that visitors can follow into penguin habitats and observe their interactions.)

As most sea coast cities Puerto Madryn is a lot of fun and is prepared to receive tourists all year round. It has many restaurants located by the beach from where visitors can enjoy lunch and dinner with a spectacular view of the ocean. Stand out the Nautico Bistro (the place chosen by Puerto Madryn Beach Polo Association to do the After Polo closer event in 2020).

Puerto Madryn is a must stop for all the cruises that sail around this area because of the many activities that it has to offer: whale watching, swim and snorkelling with sea lions, kayaking, mountain bike, lounging at the beach, sailing tours among others.
