Unique & Outstanding Horse Riding Experiences

Horseback Safari along the Rio Quillen

per person

The story of the founding of this Estancia on the banks of the Quillen River in the province of Neuquen is quite similar to that of most ranches in Patagonia. For the most part, those who settled on these lands were pioneers—immigrants who came with the dream of living in Patagonia, or people who arrived for work and ended up being captivated by the beauty of these lands.

This was precisely the case of Don Juan Lagos Marmol: in 1908, he was appointed by Argentina’s Ministry of the Interior to travel to Neuquen in order to investigate the territory and certain criminal acts that were taking place there. He had to cross the region on horseback, as it was the only way to reach these remote lands.

Don Lagos Marmol was captivated by the beauty of these lands in Northern Patagonia. Eventually, he decided to stay and lease 25,000 hectares, which he later went on to purchase over time. Today, the ranch remains in the hands of the family, who offer a unique horseback-riding experience.

The ranch is located within Lanin Volcano National Park. The landscapes of this park are truly captivating, especially the view of the summit of Lanin Volcano, which stands out with its tall, snow-capped pea

Lanin Volcano National Park is located about 120 kilometers from San Martin de los Andes, near the Alumine area.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival at San Martin de los Andes airport. Pick-up and transfer to a hotel in town. On this first night, the riders will have the opportunity to get to know each other and attend a briefing about the upcoming days on horseback. Depending on the arrival time, this first day can also be used to explore the town of San Martin de los Andes — stroll around its main square, walk along the shores of Lake Lacar, and enjoy a delicious picada and a craft beer.

Day 2: After an early breakfast, transportation will pick up all the riders and take them to the ranch. The drive takes approximately two hours. The starting point will be El Puesto Rio Quillen, where lunch will be served before the true adventure begins!

After a short siesta, the horses will be prepared for the first ride. This will be the moment to learn about the saddles used and to choose the right horse for each rider. Once ready, the group will set off toward Mallin Escondido, where the first glamping-style camp awaits. Here, riders can relax and enjoy all the comforts of a cozy night — including hot water and a warm, comfortable bed.

Day 3: On the third day — the second day on horseback — riders will travel along the southern slope of the valley, cross the Quillen River, and reach the northern riverbank around lunchtime. If the weather allows, there will be an opportunity to take a refreshing swim in the river.

In the afternoon, the journey continues toward the northern side of the valley, where the next glamping site, Campamento Voladero, is located. Here, riders can unwind in comfort and enjoy a traditional Patagonian meal by the fire.

Day 4: In the morning, after a healthy breakfast, riders will be ready to set out on one of the longest days on horseback. The route leads toward Mallin Picudo — a type of Patagonian wetland characterized by lush, green pastures. Lunch will be enjoyed in the mallin area before continuing the journey into the surreal Araucaria forest — perhaps one of the most magical moments of the entire ride. The trail then descends a fairly steep slope offering breathtaking panoramic views of Lanin Volcano and Lake Quillen.

By late afternoon, the group will arrive at Campamento Malalco, the main and most comfortable of the three glamping camps. Dinner will be served inside the cozy mountain shelter.

Day 5: This day is a bit more relaxed, with the focus on enjoying the lake’s beaches. Riders will saddle up and ride to the pier, where a boat will be waiting to take them across the lake to Playa Lumillas. There, riders can enjoy a delicious lakeside lunch cooked over an open fire. They will also have the opportunity to swim in the calm waters, take a nap, and explore the area on foot. In the afternoon, the boat will bring everyone back to the pier, where the horses will be waiting to ride back to the camp.

Day 6: Ruca Choroi Volcano is located within the ranch and rises 2,320 meters above sea level. The goal of this day is to ascend the volcano to its highest peak. During the climb, riders will pass through typical forests of lenga trees, reed beds, and even Araucarias. Once past the vegetation zone, in the higher areas, they will reach the volcano’s crater, where they will stop for lunch.

Afterward, riders can trek to the summit of the volcano, where they will enjoy breathtaking panoramic views and be able to see the seven volcanoes that dominate this part of the Andes.

The group will spend the final night at Glamping Malalco, sharing memories and stories from the ride. The next day, transportation will take them back to San Martin de los Andes.

Other activities for riders and non riders companions

The entire Lanin National Park area offers countless outdoor activities. Guests who prefer not to join the horseback ride can stay behind to enjoy the beaches, local cuisine, and strolls around San Martin de los Andes.

The town of San Martin offers a variety of excursions. One highlight is a visit to Lake Lolog. This lake is neither very deep nor particularly large, so its waters are usually warmer compared to other Patagonian lakes. Nearby, there is an old bridge that, when crossed, leads to the riverbank, where fly fishing is possible.

Another lovely excursion offered in San Martin de los Andes is taking a ferry to the shores of Villa Meliquina — a beach on Lake Lacar that is a bit removed from the town. The landscapes from this side of the lake are truly beautiful.

From San Martin de los Andes, it is also possible to start the Seven Lakes Circuit by bicycle.
