Horse Riding in Northern Patagonia
Northern Patagonia is considered one of the best destinations for horse riding in Argentina. On the back of a horse is one of the few ways to discover these almost virgin landscapes. Horse riding in Northern Patagonia is the ideal opportunity to appreciate the unique landscape the region offers. The place is famous for its turquoise and green lakes as for its ancient forests. Riders will make their way through golden valleys and beautiful mountains.
The horses
Horse riding in Patagonia is every rider’s dream. During these rides they will face many challenges, like crossing rivers and streams, going up high mountains and descending steep slopes. Criollo horses have the strength and the endurance to face the adventure. They are the perfect horse to do this type of ride.
The ride
Horse riding in Northern Patagonia is a 6-day adventure. The same can be shorten to just 2, 3, 4 or 5 nights. The length depends on the availability as on the weather conditions.
The transfer from Bariloche to the Estancia where the riding begins is not included.

Itinerary
- Transfer to Mount Las Buitreras, located 25 km away from Bariloche's Airport.
- The riding begins at Estancia El Desafío. It's a six hour per day ride, usually three in the morning and three in the afternoon.
- Day 1: Once in the Estancia, riders will get to know the guides and horses. The first part will be towards the Jones Mallín, where lunch will be. After, they will ride three more hours until Estancia Las Mellizas. Here they will spend the night and enjoy a nice fire, food and guitar.
- Day 2: On the second day, after breakfast surrounded by the incredible nature, horses and riders will got to Pichinleufu River (three hour ride). There will be a pause for lunch in a forest of Ñires and Lengas trees. After lunch, they will ride three more hours, they will reach the highest point, the Portezuelo. From here they will have a Panoramic view of the Las Mellizas Lagoon. On the way down to the valley they will find a camp where they will spend the night under the Patagonian sky.
- Day 3: Mount Colorado and Mount La Leona. On the third day they will reach Mount Colorado, from where they will have a spectacular view of the Andes Mountains. Lunch will be a picnic at 1.800 metres above sea level. Then, they will continue three more hours until Mount La Leona. The night will be in the same camp as in day 2.
- Day 4: After breakfast, riders will get back to the adventure. On this day they will also ride three hours in the morning and three after lunch. They will reach the Chubut River where they will set the camp.
- Day 5: The main landscape on this day will be the great Patagonian steppe, ideal for long gallops! Lunch will be at Pampa Los Coirones (Coiron is a type of grass, typical of Patagonia). In the afternoon, they will ride three more hours until reaching again Pichileufu where they will spend the night.
- Day 6: The last day of this incredible ride will be mostly downwards. Again, riders will do three hours before lunch and then three more. They will get to Estancia Las Buitreras. Here the riding comes to an end.

Other activities for riders and non riders companions
The city of San Carlos de Bariloche is without doubt one of the most important touristic cities of Patagonia. It was founded in 1902; is surrounded by mountains, lakes and forests; during the winter is covered in snow and is one the most important ski resorts of Argentina. Visitors can get to Bariloche very easily by plane, there are many flights and also, they can travel by car from Buenos Aires.
Driving Bariloche by car can also be a very nice way to get to know the area, especially taking the Circuito Chico road. The whole road is a picture in itself, there are different spots to stop and take pictures such as Panoramic point, perfect place to have a 360 view of the Nahuel Huapi lake. The road also goes through the Llao Llao neighborhood (an area located by the Morenito Lake, where the luxury Llao Llao hotel is located; this hotel is world known for its golf course, international golf tournaments take place here).
Another gem with a great view is Mount Otto. Visitors can get here using a ski lift. On the top there is a circular cafe from where one can appreciate the spectacular landscape while enjoying something to drink and eat. Bariloche is well known for its lakes and mountains.
The lakes are the great attraction. Between the most known we can mention the Gutierrez Lake, Moreno and Morenito Lake, and of course, the great Nahuel Huapi Lake. All of these have beaches. Also, visitors can do activities such as water ski, kayak and wind surf.
Trekking is also one of the most popular activities of Patagonia. There are endless trails and views to discover and enjoy. Among them, we can mention the one in Laguna Negra or Refugio Frey.
