Other activities for riders and non riders companions
Haras Segundo Ayre has a unique location due to its closeness to Buenos Aires City and the area of Pilar, but it is also surrounded by small rural towns that offer nice traditional places to visit. The access to Haras Segundo Ayres by the entrance of Carlos Keen paved except for the last 400 meters.
Lujan city is also very close to Haras Segundo Ayre. This is a very important religious city and one of the most well-known pilgrimage centers of Argentina. Of Course, the Basilica de Nuestra Señora de Luján stands out proudly in front the Belgrano square. The Basilica's architecture is mostly neo gothic and it is among the most important religious buildings of the country. It was built in honour to the Virgin of Lujan, who is also the patron saint of Argentina. Inside the Basilica is the statue of the virgin. This statue owes its importance to the miracles that happened around it. Each year, during the first weekend of October there is a pilgrimage from different areas of Buenos Aires to the Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Luján. Many people do the pilgrimage by horse, which is why during this time of the year it is very common to see people riding by the roads that go to Lujan city.
Carlos Keen is a small rural town placed very close to Haras Segundo Ayre. This charming town used to be very important because it was one of the stops of the railway track that joined Pergamino and Lujan city. During the end of the XIX century Argentina was considered the “Barn of the world” due to its agricultural production. Grains had to be moved from all around the country to the main ports, and the best way of doing that during those days was by train, which is why the railway construction had a lot of relevance during the XIX and XX century. Towns that were part of the railway stops acquired substantial importance. Carlos Keen town is worth a visit to see the old railway station (which nowadays works as a museum); as well as the Borromeo Chapel. Also during the celebrations of the “Círculo Criollo Martín Fierro” rodeos and folklore shows take place in this town.
Carlos Keen is a popular gastronomic destination in Buenos Aires province. It is a must to visit its old “bodegones” restaurants.
