Unique & Outstanding Horse Riding Experiences

Exploring the Delta Islands on Horseback

per person

This experience offers you the opportunity to lose yourself in nature and wilderness—an ecosystem that is home to numerous species such as capybaras, caimans, wild boars, and of course, the majestic marsh deer. The best part is that the horseback ride is just an hour away from the city of Buenos Aires.

Very few people know of its existence, which is why the park is mostly visited by locals or those who are in the know. Although you need to take Panamerican Route 9 to reach the park, it’s not visible from the highway. In fact, after exiting at the town of Ingeniero Otamendi (who donated the land to create this protected area), and driving just a few blocks, the landscape suddenly changes completely. You transition from the city to the countryside in just a few minutes.

Soon, after passing the old train station that shares the town’s name, a wide dirt road lined with vegetation—especially foxtail grass—opens up. Just a few minutes down this path, the city already feels far away.

A large colonial-style arch marks the entrance to the National Park—which, given some time, makes for a lovely post-ride stop.

Nai and Cristian’s ranch lies on the other side of the great Parana River and is part of the delta islands. There, they keep their horses, cows, and grow poplars and willows. Cristian’s family has lived on the island for many years, as the government originally granted this land to those willing to settle and develop it. The thing is, while living on the island may be paradise, it’s no easy task. Just imagine what it’s like when strong southeasterly storms hit and the islands flood! Still, they love their home deeply and it shows in everything they do.

This is a unique experience that combines a boat ride, horseback riding, an introduction to rational or Indian horsemanship, and the chance to explore a truly wild territory just a few kilometers from Buenos Aires.

Itinerary

This is a full-day activity.

9 am: Arrival at the Ingeniero Otamendi dock. You can get there by car (when the road is in good condition); otherwise, you’ll arrive until the road is okay and there Cristian will be waiting with his truck. When it rains, the access road can become difficult, and he will come pick you up.

Upon arrival, Cristian, Gaby (the guide), and Tomy (the park ranger) will be there to welcome you with a traditional mate. Once ready, you’ll board the boat and start navigating the great Parana River, enjoying beautiful views along the way.

When reaching the island, Nai will be waiting by the firepit, located at the tip of the island between two branches of the river. There, you’ll be welcomed with mate, homemade bread, and jams. It’s a moment to relax, get to know each other, talk about everyone’s experiences with horses, and learn about the conservation of the Marsh Deer.

10 am: Once everyone is ready, the riders will walk with Gaby to where the horses are. It’s about a 1 km walk and absolutely worth it. The trail winds through an endless forest of poplars until it opens up to a field where the horses are usually grazing. The idea is for the horses to approach you, not the other way around. Once the connection begins, both riders and horses will walk together to the round pen.

11 am: Join-Up method by Monty Roberts. Gaby specializes in rational horse training and has been working with horses for a long time. In fact, he’s one of the few certified horseback archery instructors in the country. Before the ride, he likes each rider to step into the round pen with their horse to establish the first bond. Once the foundation of the partnership is set, it’s time to saddle up and head out to explore the island.

12 pm: The horseback ride begins entering the jungle trails. Some parts of the trail are elevated—these are called embankments and they allow passage even during floods. From up there, you get a great view of the landscape, and they’re also perfect for a good gallop.

Along the way, it’s possible to spot capybaras, axis deer, and of course, marsh deer.

3 pm: Barbecue lunch by the river. This will be the perfect time to enjoy a glass of wine and share riding memories.

5 pm: Riders will jump agian on the boat and navigate the great Parana River while watching an amazing sunset

Location

The ranch is located at the dock in the town of Ingeniero Otamendi, just a few kilometers from the Ciervo de los Pantanos National Park.

Other activities for riders and non riders companions

Nai and Cristian’s ranch offers more than just horseback riding. Here, there are also talks about the conservation of natural areas and the habitat of marsh deer.

Cristian built a charming wooden cabin with his own hands, where visitors can spend the night. They can enjoy some fishing, relaxing and walking around the beautiful place.

On the way back, it’s also possible to visit the Ciervo de los Pantanos National Park and take a walk to spot deer and the hundreds of bird species that inhabit the area.
