Day Horse Riding in Carlos Keen

per person

The Martin Fierro ride in Carlos Keen is the perfect opportunity to get to know the rural towns around Buenos Aires city. For the horse lovers, it’s the ideal plan for a quick get away. This short ride can be combined with a visit to San Antonio de Areco. This is a very lovely and traditional town.

During this quick adventure on horses, riders will get to know Carlos Keen town. They will visit the old train station, very beautiful and famous, and the typical town church. The horses will take you through the rural roads surrounding the town. Part of the old “Camino Real” (the “royal road”) will be ridden. This was the road that linked Buenos Aires port with Alto Peru, which now is Bolivia. All these rural roads tend to run parallel to the old train trucks.

The duration of the ride is approximately two and a half hours. There is an option to do a longer one of four hours. The ride can be done in the morning, in the afternoon, and even during the night. This last option is only available when there is a full moon.

Itinerary

  • The meeting point is in the haras El Lider. This is an old establishment that used to take care of racehorses. This is in Carlos Keen town, almost 200 meters from it. Carlos Keen is at an hour's distance, more or less, from Buenos Aires city.
  • One can get to Carlos Keen by car taking the National Route 7. Riders can also take a bus from Plaza Italia, in Buenos Aires city. This will leave them in Lujan city, which is only 10 minutes away from Carlos Keen.
  • Marcelo will be waiting for the riders and welcome them. He is very passionate about horses and will be the guide of the adventure. He will tell them all about the horses and the ride while having some mate in a lovely tree shadow.
  • After this, each rider will go look for their horse in the fields, with the help of Marcelo. There are at least 10 horses, mainly Criollos, which are very gentle and easy to ride. Marcelo will help the riders to put the saddles on them and get them ready. The idea is for the riders to learn and get used to the “recado”, the typical gaucho saddle.
  • The ride will begin exploring some of the main roads of Carlos Keen. They will later take a rural road that will allow the real Pampa to be appreciated. On their horses, the riders will see a lot of crops in the surrounding fields and all the trees of the old estancias. During some parts of the ride the path can get thicker with plants and trees, such as the typical Acacia.
  • After a while, they will start to return. The route design by Marcelo is a circular one, this means riders will not go back the same road they came from.
  • *If riders chose to do the longer ride (the four hour ride) they will arrive at Villa Ruiz town.
  • * The ride can be done including lunch or not. If it is included, it will take place where the ride starts and finishes, under the shadows of the trees. Marcelo will make a great asado. There is also the option to have lunch in the town, in one of its many restaurants. If it is a weekend day, we recommend making a reservation. Many people visit the town during the weekends.

Location

The town of Carlos Keen is less than 90 kilometres away from the city of Buenos Aires. It’s very near Lujan. You can get there by National Route 7.

Other activities for riders and non riders companions

This horseback riding experience is perfect for everyone, those who love horses and those who don’t.

The non-riders can use the time to get to know the lovely town of Carlos Keen. The place has various options for them to have something to drink or eat. It is a small town, of about 6 to 8 blocks. It’s perfect for walking around. Around 500 people live here in total.

The town was born around 1.870 when the construction of the railroad that linked Lujan to Pergamino started. Back then, trains were very important in these areas. They were in charge of transporting all the crops to the ports for their exportation. We must remember that in those years Argentina was known as the granary of the world.

These towns are the perfect opportunity to have a delicious asado. This ride is the perfect get away from the city for the day. Here you will disconnect from the city chaos and enjoy the fields and the country air.
